It’s been a good month for new bitmojis with just a single 4-rating at the low end and two 9ers to celebrate including…
Ominous swirling vortex? Check. Phrase that’s trending in popularity and fills a conversational niche not covered by any of the 2,700+ bitmojis released to date? Check. Appropriately concerned/pained expression on avatar’s face? Check. It all adds up to our final BotW for January 2019.
The Twitter-slang phrase “big mood” has been growing in popularity since late 2015, and has finally hit the big time, scoring its very own bitmoji. And not a moment too soon, if you ask me. No more will you or I run the risk of seeming hopelessly out-of-touch with our use of the “I feel u” or “Relatable” bitmojis from 2015 and last August respectively. “Big mood” isn’t the first bitmoji to spell out it’s text message with sunglasses lenses, but it does present us with the largest sunglasses lenses we’ve ever seen on a bitmoji, and that’s something.
Don’t Cry & Tissue Face
There are many—one might even go so far as to say a disturbing amount of—bitmojis featuring the avatar crying (even if you aren’t counting the laughing-and-crying ones or the poignant single tear ones), but precious few that offer a word or gesture of consolation to the forlorn. So while the avatar-face-on-an-inanimate-object-given-stick-arms-and-legs is a weird way to go about such a thing, “Don’t cry” nonetheless promises to be quite useful. It’s harder to imagine when the text-less variant featuring a happy-faced tissue box will get used, but I like that sort of creative challenge.
Another phrase that’s been in circulation a long time before finally landing its own bitmoji this week, “Not cool” is not terribly impressive in terms of art, expression, pose, or font, and yet, it doesn’t need to be. It’s just as straightforward and simple as it should be, and while that doesn’t win it any awards or even a particularly high rating, it’s a welcome addition to the arsenal.
We’re looking at much the same story for “Exactly!” which isn’t even a trendy phrase, just a useful one that Bitmoji has so far overlooked. There are times when “U right, u right” or “Agreed” with their thoughtful poses and expressions just aren’t the right way to go, and that’s exactly (see what I did there?) when this bitmoji, with it’s friendly smile and demonstrative hand gesture fits the bill. Side note: why isn’t there yet a bitmoji for “See what I did there?”?
For all the expressions of love, blown kisses, and otherwise heart-saturated imagery, using Bitmoji to give specific compliments has never been that easy even when it comes to physical appearance. Until today, for instance, there hasn’t been a way to express to the person you’re flirting with (or married to, or both) that you think they’re pretty. Sure 2017’s “Ooooh pretty!” was workable toward that end, but more appropriate as reaction to someone sending you a photo of a nice dress or their garden. The pose and expression here also convey a “golly, shucks, gee-whiz” sort of innocence that similar predecessors like “Hot” and “Lookin Good” lacked.
NOTE: While the 10-rating, 5-rating, and 1-rating are actual official bitmojis, the rest of the ratings (0, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9) are unofficial custom creations, so you don’t expect to find them in the Bitmoji app or The Bitmoji Museum Archives. Names applied to particular bitmojis are entirely unofficial and used only for convenience.
